Icertainly think we made the American crew of the aircraft carrier, USS George H W Bush, feel welcome over the weekend.

Stars and stripes were aloft in pubs and clubs, cars with binocular-wielding occupants descended on Stokes Bay, and a flurry of small ship activity around her made it a real occasion.

As we made our way to the Gosport Ferry on Sunday evening after a barbecue with friends, we heard much cheering from the Ship Anson pub. But the rucksack-carrying Americans were all quiet – it was just us Brits in party mode.

I wonder what the Yanks thought of our bad karaoke and fashion sense. To the man wearing a grey tracksuit, please wear pants next time!
