Inmates re-offend because prison is a comfy existence

COMMENT: Bandstand event is a victim of its own success

Have your say

We have further evidence that what passes for a justice system in this country is now in a state of dangerously farcical decline.

Next week’s Question Time is to be broadcast from Wormwood Scrubs – and the audience will contain 10 serving prisoners.

Not only that, they will be able to question Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke and his predecessor, Jack Straw. Brace yourselves for wheedling, snivelling and condescension on an industrial scale.

We keep hearing prison is not working because so many inmates re-offend. I suspect this is because it is such a comfortable existence, most are only too happy to return.

If they were subjected to a more rigorous and disciplined regime, recidivism would not be so rife.
