The way things are shaping up, there’s soon going to be more sporting knights and dames in these islands than you can shake a microphone at.

Cyclist Bradley Wiggins is certain to be summoned before the monarch to bend a bony knee after becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France.

He then complemented this remarkable achievement by capturing a gold medal at the Olympics.

Rebecca Adlington is not called the golden girl of swimming without good reason – and if precedent matters she can also expect an invitation to Buckingham Palace before long.

Those in charge of such matters may well feel they have set the bar a bit low – but it’s too late now to change their minds.
