I’m very excited by The News’ pioneering scheme to give budding young journalists the chance of a lifetime to train alongside News reporters in a classroom within the newsroom at Lakeside, North Harbour.

What a fantastic, groundbreaking start for the nine lucky young students – and what better way to not only learn the ropes on a daily newspaper, but also to venture out into the community to talk to local people and get to know the area where they live.

It’s a unique opportunity to experience the industry first-hand. Who knows where it might lead?

I really hope it inspires other businesses to follow suit and would like to wish the young journalists every success. If only this had been around when I was their age.
