Last one out PLEASE turn off the lights

We all know grumpy people, you know, those who are short-tempered, often tetchy and love a good moan. Others might disagree, but I've never thought of myself as a grumpy person.

But apparently nearly a quarter of all fathers admits to often being cranky.

And there are certain things that annoy all fathers across the world.

An article on the Daily Mail website revealed a poll of 1,000 dads found that leaving lights on around the house was most likely to make them grumble.

I remember when I was a child my father would often remind us to switch off the lights when we left a room and he wouldn’t be happy when we didn’t adhere to this simple rule.

Now, all these years on, I find myself in the same situation.

I have to remind my daughters to plunge the room into darkness when they walk out of the door.

Second on the list of things that make fathers grump, just like Victor Meldrew, are traffic jams.

Yes, this can make me sigh but I do try to remember when I’m sitting there bumper to bumper that I am not in the traffic jam, I AM the traffic jam.

Down the list at number 13 is the front or back door being left open.

OK, I admit, this can make me grumpy, especially in winter when I’ve had the radiators on heating up the house when suddenly all that warmth is allowed to escape and cold air is allowed to come in. The same goes for windows being left open.

A television programme also made the list and at 26 one of the things that makes all dads grumpy is EastEnders.

We all know the show is pretty grumpy itself, but I was once a fan until the biggest anti-climax came when it was revealed that Ian Beale’s son Bobby killed his sister Lucy. At that point the show lost another viewer.

Two places behind EastEenders on the grumpy list is the price of petrol and diesel.

At the moment it’s impossible to be grumpy at the prices.

It actually makes me smile when I drive on to the petrol station forecourt and see the cost of fuelling my car is less than a pound a litre.

I just hope it stays that way otherwise... I might just get grumpy.

Apparently a good night’s sleep is the best thing to banish the grumpiness and the good news is I sleep very well.

I’m pleased to report my daughters are now learning to switch off the lights when they leave the room.

However, switching the light off while I’m still in the room can make me slightly grumpy.
