Let's make science and engineering for everyone

Fifty or 60 years ago, the sciences were no doubt as popular as any other subject for youngsters.

But fast-forward a few generations, and we find ourselves in an era where science and technology subjects can struggle to keep young people interested for the long haul.

This is reflected in the jobs market place, as it is often difficult for schools to recruit teachers of these subjects and engineering firms to find the qualified staff they need.

And that goes double for girls, who even today may grow up feeling that those subjects are ‘for boys’.

Of course many schools are working hard to dispel this myth and encourage youngsters to get involved with science.

Today we report on an event at Gomer Junior School in Gosport where pupils took part in experiments.

And their parents were there to see the results.

Unsurprisingly, it was a great success.

The youngsters got a hands-on taste of what science had to offer.

And the teachers and parents were able to watch their interest blossom.

We applaud this type of event and the countless other similar ones that are doubtless taking place across the region.

This area has a proud history of being an engineering hub.

Despite the closure of the BAE shipbuilding hall, there are still plenty of other firms that fall under the umbrella of engineering.

Those children who were enthused about science and engineering will go on to be the next generation of employees for firms across the area.

So it’s in everyone’s interests to make sure it’s high on the agenda.
