Marr got it spot on when he criticised honours system

Don't worry children, it won't hurt a bit...

Broadcaster Andrew Marr went up in my estimation the minute he revealed he didn’t want to be honoured by the Queen.

The journalist disagrees with the way gongs are given out to those doing well-paid jobs they enjoy and believes only those who’ve done something good for others should be recognised in this way.

He’s spot on. It was good to see local people recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list at the weekend. They deserve their moment in the spotlight, thanks to their dedication to others.

But giving Gary Barlow an OBE for services to the entertainment industry is as ludicrous as recognising the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton. It’s their job – and they’re already paid handsomely for it.
