This is a massive decision - so don't waste your vote
I thought I'd do some of my own research so I could make an informed decision about whether we should stay in the EU or leave.
I’m totally fed up with the political rhetoric being uttered by Cameron and Johnson.
From nuclear war to Hitler, it’s all getting a bit silly.
As far as I can remember, we have been part of a European Union.
The idea of a Frenchman after the Second World War was that a United States of Europe, working as one via economy, law and values, would mean countries involved would not wage war on each other.
I totally understand the ideals of the EU and Europe has never been more peaceful as it is today.
But the union has grown stronger and, over the years, more and more of our sovereign powers have passed to Brussels.
We pay £350m a week to be a member, but get around half of it back. Many laws are created by unelected ‘Eurocrats’ in Brussels and this is what seems to be going against the grain for many.
But the UK now has the fifth-biggest economy in the world, the second-biggest in Europe.
We are thriving in this union. If we saved that £350m a week, would we lose it in lack of business?
If we did exit, we’d still want to be part of the single market and the rules of membership, like freedom of movement within the EU, will remain.
Plus, who’s to say the EU would want to do business with us and give us the perks we enjoy today if we turned our backs on it?
I’m still undecided.
Do our European cousins need us more than we need them?
Is it a case of ‘better the devil you know’ or ‘brave new world’?
Some say we’d lose our importance, but don’t forget we’re leading members of NATO and the G8.
We’d still have a say.
The more I read, the more I realise that this is a massive decision for us all to make.
So my advice is to please read up on this, familiarise yourself with the issues and don’t waste your vote on a popularity contest between the Eton boys.
