New design better reflects city in which tower stands

It’s always a big deal when your team unveils their new strip for the coming season.

Pompey’s designs have been out for about three weeks and the first selfies of fans wearing them hit social media last week.

It was really very impressive to see the company and council listening to the city and going back to the drawing board

It’ll never be better than the Pompey Pals-inspired design for last season — how could it — but it’s not a bad effort.

But why the fuss? I reckon it’s because the colour of your war paint has always been the best way to tell friend from foe and that kind of psychology didn’t go away as soon as we stopped using woad and being all Boudicca about things.

So the players on the pitch become our warriors and our mates in the stands of whatever sport we’re watching are our clan.

It follows, then, that colour is important, and our distaste for anything resembling historic foes — arch-enemies, if you will — can be all-consuming.

Let’s take Cardiff City FC as an example. Nicknamed the Bluebirds, there was outrage when the club’s Malaysian owner, Vincent Tan, decided the strip should be red because in south east Asia that colour brings luck.

I’ll say nothing about that apart from to point out Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League after the 2013/14 season and reverted to traditional blue in January this year.

As it is in Wales, so it is in Portsmouth, so is it any wonder there was outrage about Emirates Airlines’ plans to paint the Spinnaker Tower red and white — the colours of Pompey’s most bitter rivals?

The level of invective toward the UAE-based company and Portsmouth City Council might have seemed an overreaction.

But when you remember colour and identity have gone hand in hand since we were running around painting ourselves blue, it really wasn’t.

We’re not so evolved that this stuff doesn’t matter.

So it was really very impressive to see the company and council listening to the city and going back to the drawing board.

The new royal blue, pale gold and white design is far better and reflects the city in which the tower stands.

Just no-one mention Arsenal’s new away kit.
