David Cameron’s decision to recommend ousted cabinet colleagues for knighthoods proves why our current honours system is so deeply flawed it’s no longer worth bothering with.

No non-MP could accept there’s any justification at all in ever giving a politician a trumped-up accolade, let alone when the person in question has been found wanting in their current role. If they can’t hold on to a cabinet position why should they get a pat for services rendered?

Normal folk who get pushed out of their jobs don’t suddenly find themselves clutching an invite to Buckingham Palace.

Why can’t the prime minister see that this is an insult to all the humble, ordinary, people who do deserve to be recognised by the Queen?
