It really does seem Europe is hell bent on crippling our ferry companies with tight new emission regulations from next year.
This will see the burning of heavy, unrefined fuels banned and it will affect all operators from Portsmouth.
Ships will need to be fitted with very expensive ‘scrubbers’ to clean the emissions.
They will also have to run off diesel, in Wightlink’s case, which is far more costly, or as with many Brittany Ferries’ ships, covert to LPG.
As planes will continue to pollute the skies unrestricted, it seems the EU will not allow ferry companies to compete on a level playing field? This should be a major concern for us in Portsmouth, which is Britain’s second busiest ferry port.
