The family and I nipped up to London last Saturday morning to see the poppy installation around the Tower of London on a last-minute visit before it was dismantled.

It was a 5am wake-up call to get there before the crowds and although we made Tower Tube station at 8am, everyone else in the country had had the same idea.

We were packed as tight as sardines in a can.

When we could actually walk, it was at the pace of a geriatric snail.

But in truly British fashion, the only raised voices in the splendid hush came from those wondering aloud why there wasn’t a system in place to ‘one-way’ the crowds.

Still, we made it out and home in time to read that the installation’s been extended for a month...
