Pedantic nonsense, but at least it stops another book

COMMENT: Bandstand event is a victim of its own success

Have your say

Scotland Yard is engaged in a legal tussle to prevent files which could conceivably lead to the identity of Jack the Ripper being made public.

A former policeman is seeking the information so he can cash in by writing yet another book on the gruesome slayings and their alleged perpetrator.

However, Special Branch says the files contain the names of several informers and to divulge them – even after all this time – would be a breach of confidentiality.

That is pedantic nonsense, of course, but I hope the wishes of Scotland Yard prevail. What the world does not need right now is yet another fanciful concoction of speculation, rumour and half-truths to add to those already crowding out our library shelves.
