Ricky Gervais was right - these people know nothing about the real world | Clive Smith

I’m not one for awards ceremonies, never have been. But as the years have passed they’ve become a bore with some celebrities using their time on stage to make political statements and go on about whatever the latest issue is troubling the loud minority.

But Ricky Gervais hosted this year’s Golden Globes and in his opening remarks he brutally tore into the celebrities, telling them they were ‘in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world’.

It was eight minutes of savaging and if you haven’t seen it, do watch it.

Seeing the audience squirm and choke on their Moet was just what was needed in drab January.

His best line? ‘If you win, accept your award, thank your agent and your god and f*** off!’ was more golden than the globes themselves!

And if there was ever confirmation that what he said about the Hollywood elite was a beauty, there was this tweet from Stella McCartne said: ‘This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear the same tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you… x.’

It’s hardly as if there are landfill sites overflowing with dinner jackets and cummerbunds. What the hell was she going on about? This is exactly what Gervais was alluding to in his opening monologue. Just shows how out of touch they are to come out with this sanctimonious guff just days after what he said.

So the man plans to wear the same tuxedo for an entire awards season. Wow, would you believe it? Hats off to the fella, don’t know how he got through such an ordeal. I’m just glad Stella drew our attention to this selfless act, I hope one day I’ll have his courage.

I’ve had a pair of boxers forgoing on 15 years now. They’re just hanging together by a thread. They’ve seen some tough times so I’m well overdue a tweet from Calvin Klein for doing my bit to save the planet. Or even a mention from Greta Thunberg. I’m easy either way.

Harry will have to get used to sound of clicking fingers

I wrote here a while ago about the demise of Prince Harry as a man at the hands of his new wife. He is a husk of the man he was.

Now he and Meghan are to take a step back from their roles and become financially independent he is essentially removing himself from the royal family.

Without trying to sound like a bitchy mother when the playground mafia are tearing shreds off someone – it appears she’s got what she wanted. I guess life as a duchess wasn’t what she expected – a small fish in a big pond.

I hope he gets used to the sounds of clicking fingers because they’ll get even louder now. And he’ll have plenty more time to hug trees and worry about polar bears.

We should celebrate Qasem Soleimani’s demise by drone

It was just a few days into 2020 and the Third World War was trending on social media. I’ve found better ways to shift a hangover, but que sera sera.

Rather than nuclear fall-out taking me, I found out there had been a drone strike by America killing Iran’s top general.

He was listed as a terrorist leader by the US, the UK and even the EU. So here I am thinking good riddance, better off dead than planning more atrocities.

But there are actually people out there shouting from the rooftops about the injustice of it all. There were even vigils held for him. These people need to get a grip. It’s no different really to when Bin Laden was taken out.
