The news of Rik Mayall’s untimely death really came as a shock.

The energy and humour of his characters make up a big chunk of my life.

As a nine-year-old I was too young to understand the humour of The Young Ones, but loved the anarchic behaviour.

Filthy, Rich & Catflap was panned by the critics but loved by the fans. Richie and Eddie in Bottom had me belly laughing with the squalor of their sad, turbulent and often violent lives.

Lord Flashheart kept stealing the show in Blackadder and I’m wondering if Alan B’Stard MP would now be Ukip?

Rik helped reshape comedy in the ’80s and broke the mould in the ’90s. A legend.
