The rules are there for a good reason on alcohol

Whether a corner shop or the busiest bar in the city, the rules are there and they’re there for a reason.

Premises have a duty not to sell to underage people or to those who are already intoxicated.

The News has often reported on ‘sting’ operations in which youngsters are sent into stores to make sure these laws are being abided by.

For those who are found to be flouting the rules, a fine and court appearance lies ahead.

And we welcome these 
operations, whatever form they take.

As we report today, a convenience store in Fareham has had its licence revoked by the borough council.

A police investigation uncovered that members of staff were selling alcohol to drunks from the back of the store.

And worse, the shop was also being used to sell stolen goods.

We applaud the police and Fareham Borough Council for taking a strong stance in this case.

It sends a clear message to all licensees – obey the rules or pay the price.

We’re sure that the vast majority of shops and bars would not consider breaching the law in this way.

But for those who may, the ruling says it’s their livelihoods on the line.

Alcohol and anti-social behaviour are inextricably linked.

The problems caused by both can lead to misery for the local community.

No-one deserves to have to put up with problems like this on their doorstep.

The police and councils face a big enough battle as it is without shops and bars adding to the problem.

We just hope the message gets across.
