SAM POOLE: Week of top sport has been an inspiration

It has been a triumphant week in sport with Portugal winning the Euros and Andy Murray securing his second championship at Wimbledon.

Two undeniably eventful tournaments have come to a close and for many it’s all eyes onto the next.

I’m not a huge follower of either football or tennis and have never really been keen to know what is going.

In fact you could call me more of an academic – or a geek.

I have more of an interest in politics, anything media and creative.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t make me a boring person.

Because I do get stuck in to all the excitement when larger tournaments take place.

Wimbledon is always a joy for me.

I thoroughly appreciate every moment of it, especially when there’s a Brit knocking the others down heading to the final.

And you could say there’s been a crossover between football and tennis after David Beckham smoothly caught the ball during at Wimbledon match last year.

If anyone was going to catch the ball, it would be him.

With regards to football, I more or less lost interest in the Euros as soon as England were out.

I meticulously watched every England match and had some heated conversations about their performance. But when they were out – I was out.

That was until the final. Millions of people had their eyes fixated on the final match on Sunday evening, Portugal v France.

I was impressed with the performances of both sides.

One thing which really struck me was the sheer devotion Portugal had to see a positive outcome.

Acknowledging they may not win the competition, they weren’t restricted and gave it their all.

I admire that in sport. The players have such skill and passion for what they do.

This reminds me of how we should be regarding our careers and journey in life. We should all strive to do what we love in order to make a difference.

Regardless of our abilities, we can carry out something we desire to do if we work hard at it.

Young people of today are often left disheartened because of what others may say to them.

Independently, we need to find something we are good at and enjoy. From here we should work hard at it and be the best we can be.

Keep your head high, move forward in your failures, and make a difference.
