A Sunday newspaper reported that Portsmouth’s Tal Ben-Haim is on £37,000 a week.

No wonder PFC want him off their books. What few fans know is that most clubs relieve players of the tedium of paying tax.

The HMRC, well-known to Pompey fans, has revealed that last year Premiership players avoided some £100m tax by using legal tax avoidance schemes.

What do they spend their obscene salaries on? Do they endow libraries and concert halls, or set up housing settlements for the poor? Or even, when buying their umpteenth Porsche or Ferrari, ask if the makers receive a proper wage?
