Security ought to have been handed over to armed forces

Where better to begin the fight against hate crime?

Have your say

Keith Vaz does not feature high on my list of favourite politicians (too smarmy by far). But he is absolutely right about the shambles over Olympic security.

G4S are being paid £284m to provide 13,000 trained staff to keep Games venues safe.

But with two weeks to go, the company suddenly announces that 9,000 of them are ‘going through the final stages of extensive training, vetting and accreditation.’

I think that is a shameful lack of professionalism and preparation – if it can be described as such.

Why didn’t the organisers do a deal with the government and hand over security entirely to our armed forces – and pay the service personnel involved a handsome bonus?

They’re going to end up doing the job anyway.
