Sir David should have come clean about polar bear film

Home closure will give residents some respite

Sir David Attenborough is a television icon; a man whose contribution to the medium can never be over-estimated.

But even the blessed and the venerable make mistakes – and he has emerged from the deception over the polar bear cubs with his halo slightly askew.

His voice-over during this particular part of the Frozen Planet series clearly gave the impression the creatures had been filmed under the Arctic ice rather than in the safety of a German zoo. And his explanation afterwards (it could not be described as an apology) sounded petulant.

He should have come clean during the programme about the danger of attempting to film this particular sequence in the wild.

It would have been accepted and forgotten.
