State shouldn’t be subsidising anyone who chooses to be fat

Have your say

Iread that thousands of people are being paid sickness benefits because they’re too fat to work – and that this is costing us taxpayers £54m a year.

These kind of payments have more than doubled in five years.

Oh, and obesity is costing the NHS (paid for by us) more than £9bn a year.

Nine billion quid! If people are fat because of medical reasons or maybe something to do with their genetics, then fair enough. Let their benefits continue.

But what about all those who have piled on the weight just because they eat junk food and spend too much time with their backside welded to the sofa?

Do they deserve to be subsidised by the state as they tuck into another family-sized takeaway pizza? No way.
