So, I see the University of Portsmouth has joined the rush to raise student fees from £3,000 to £8,000 a year.

Yet the universities minister – and Havant MP – David Willetts, had said universities would charge maximum fees only in ‘exceptional circumstance’.

Another pledge down the drain.

What we are seeing is the abolition of fees and their replacement with a long-term loan, with no down-payment, guaranteed by the government.

It will be funded by the taxpayer and reclaimed from taxation only when the graduate earns enough.

A rum state of affairs.

The only consequence will be to stop all but the wealthy from getting the chance to go to university.
