Their pain comes from forcing themselves to stop drinking

It’s important the parade continues – but safely

Have your say

It’s a funny old thing, freedom, isn’t it?

A few people I know are doing the Go Sober for October challenge, where they’re staying off the sauce to raise a bit of dosh for charity, as well as give their livers a rest for a month.

They can’t wait for October to be over and get back to drinking. But another of my friends can’t understand why they’d find it hard to go in a pub and not drink. She’s tee-total, most of the time.

She thought their problem was because they’d feel pressured into drinking, or ridiculed because they weren’t.

But their pain comes from forcing themselves to give it up – it didn’t feel like a free choice. I guess that’s the difference between doing what you want and doing what you think you should.
