As the latest batch of what we are asked to believe are ever more intelligent and well-educated youngsters step off the production line, the education system in this country is once again shown up to be an unforgivable shambles.

There are genuinely bright kids unable to get the university place their results warrant, while thousands prepare to embark upon a pointless and pricey pursuit of meaningless degrees.

The only way top universities can sort the wheat from the chaff is to select what appear to be the most intelligent students and require them to sit a special examination.

It may smack of overkill, but it will end the present lottery and give the most worthy youngsters the chance they deserve.
