Time that firms behind these products paid for clean-ups

COMMENT: The return of good weather shouldn’t bring dread

Have your say

In the middle of Tesco’s annus horribilis, it looks as if the company could also be slapped with an Asbo – or whatever they’re now called – for littering.

This threat has happened in Cambridge, where the supermarket is reportedly failing to take responsibility for the litter surrounding its store.

This is great. I hope that the idea can be extended so that cigarette-makers will be fined for all the butts that smokers leave behind and chewing gum producers for all the squidgy detritus on the pavements.

In fact, if the creators of all packaging and products were to bear the brunt of the cost of removal/clean-up, perhaps we’d see less plastic in the streets and products with greater longevity.

Bring it on, I say.
