If some Americans really do believe Downton Abbey reflects a certain stratum of the British way of life, goodness knows what they will have made of the Queen’s Speech.
It is a pageant in which Ruritania collides head-on with Gilbert and Sullivan; an event so imbued with centuries-old tradition and ritual that everyone, except Huw Edwards, has long since forgotten who does what and why.
The BBC’s intoner-in-chief continues to pile up the knighthood brownie points and we can only hope Her Majesty puts him out of his misery soon.
Perhaps the BBC will let Terry Wogan provide the commentary next year. And if he can be persuaded to do it with his Eurovision hat on, that really would be fun.
