We did it!
Thanks to the amazing generosity of News readers, Dorothy’s Dream will today become true.
When we teamed up with the Rowans Hospice in Purbrook to help them launch an appeal to fund a vital new home care service, we knew we were asking a lot.
Yet in a relatively short period of time you’ve helped raise a staggering £750,000.
That money will now allow the Hospice at Home service to become a reality and for that we say thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.
Terminally ill patients will finally be able to spend their last days in their own homes, in familiar surroundings, being comforted by their loved ones.
The money has already been put to good use and 13 nurses and health care support workers will soon be on hand to give patients and their families the support they need.
We know that many of you have been spurred on to support Dorothy’s Dream because of your own personal experiences.
You’ve told us about loved ones you have lost and how, in many cases, it was the amazing care you had received from the Rowans that had helped ease your pain during those dark, difficult, days.
The fact that so many of you have thrown your weight behind this campaign proves without doubt how high you hold the Rowans in esteem.
There’s still more work to be done. The total amount needed to fund the two-year pilot is £1m – but for now we should take time to let this extraordinary achievement sink in.
Ruth White, the chief executive of the Rowans, sums it up when she says: ‘The hospice is their hospice.’
That’s clearly a sentiment all of you who have put your hands in your pockets believe.
By organising fundraising events you’ve rallied round to achieve something truly remarkable.
Together you have made a real difference to the lives of other people across our communities.
And for that, we salute you.
