Trim’s help and support is vital for veterans

Sometimes it can be the shock of no longer being in a regimented environment where everything is planned and organised, of finding themselves back in civvy street and suddenly having to adjust and face up to practical issues.

It could be dealing with the National Health Service, sorting out housing needs or tackling other aspects of daily life that don’t need to be addressed when you’re in uniform.

But the biggest difficulty that veterans may face is one that can’t be seen.

Those who have been on active service in areas of conflict could have witnessed some horrific sights that can leave a lasting impression.

Sadly, mental health problems can be a legacy of life in the services and veterans need to be able to turn to someone for help when they’re suffering.

That’s why Trauma Risk Management (Trim) for Veterans, launched at the Royal Marines Museum in Eastney yesterday, is so important.

Trim was introduced more than 16 years ago as a form of specialist ‘in house’ support for Royal Marines veterans suffering with mental illness such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

But now this service has been extended to all Royal Navy veterans.

We welcome its expansion and urge all those veterans struggling on alone to swallow their pride and get in touch with the people at Trim.

They’ll receive a sympathetic ear from trained practitioners who can give valuable support and advice in person and over the phone.

They can also help to put veterans in touch with the right mental health services.

Giving veterans the correct support and access to healthcare professionals is part of an holistic approach that is definitely the way forward.

Because getting them the best treatment at the right time could make such a difference to those lives that have been blighted by the lingering demons of conflicts gone by.
