Well, I certainly didn’t see that coming. But, like the Tories’ shock election win and Brexit, 2016 has been the year of political surprises.
But how did political newcomer Donald Trump win the race for the White House when you consider he is seen by some as a racist and a bigot?
Maybe what is happening in America is similar to the undying support Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is getting here
Are half the American nation secret members of the Klu Klux Klan?
Maybe, I thought, it was like Sir Richard Branson standing in our next general election. But Branson is not a bigot. In fact, he falls into the David Cameron category more than anything else.
Trump is one of the richest men in the world. A multi-billionaire, so why would he be interested in ‘saving’ America?
Why can’t he be like Bill Gates and give away some of his wealth instead?
Generally his rhetoric, sometimes offensive, sometimes insulting, is about trade and making America great again.
We don’t see a lot of this reported, but in one of his speeches he said that free trade has rebuilt China whilst America is falling apart.
This seems to be striking a chord with many Americans, who are seeing their great industries crumble.
Cities like Detroit, built on car manufacturing, have been devastated by factory closures. Now they are desolate wastelands with many residents unemployed.
Call centres and factories are closing and relocating to countries where labour is much cheaper.
Remember Ford moving Transit manufacturing from here to Turkey? The same is happening in America and they don’t like it.
It seems that the Americans feel capitalists don’t care about the working class and they see Trump as a crusader.
The Republican party sounds like it’s becoming more for the people than the Democrats.
On both sides of the pond there seems to be a wish to show the capitalists that you trample over the working classes at your peril.
Maybe what is happening in America is similar to the undying support Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is getting here.
Or is it just a crazy US version of Yes, Prime Minister?
DUAL CARRIAGEWAY BETWEEN TWO TOWNS IS ONLY ANSWER
I can’t believe the news that HMS Sultan is to close by 2021.
Not only is this a disaster for the people that work there or are in some way connected to the base, but also for the residents of Gosport.
Many families will have to relocate or will face redundancy.
For the rest of us, the continued misery of the A32 and Newgate Lane will be made worse by even more traffic from new homes.
The last thing we need in Gosport is another housing development.
The busway has only made things better for the bus company and the improvements at Newgate Lane just scratch the surface.
Major investment in a dual carriageway linking Gosport and Fareham is the only answer.
SPECTACULAR FIREWORKS, BUT WHY CELEBRATE GUY FAWKES?
I know many people, mostly dog owners, would like to ban fireworks, but I love them.
Yes, I get a bit annoyed when some go off at 11pm. But I thought Bonfire Night was spectacular.
Yet have you ever stopped to wonder why we celebrate Guy Fawkes?
He was involved in a plot to blow up Parliament and King James so his Catholic daughter would succeed him.
He was found guarding gunpowder in Westminster Palace.
Fawkes confessed and was due to be hung, drawn and quartered.
But apparently he ended up falling from the scaffold and breaking his neck, thus avoiding the need for all that mutilation.
Kind of puts me off that Catherine wheel now!
