ZELLA COMPTON: Looking afresh at our beautiful spot in the world

Have your say

The BBC’s Africa is a beautiful-looking series. But please, what is going on with the background music? It’s sentimentalism gone too far.

Sweeping orchestral accompaniments appear to be designed to give human character attributes to the animals.

Aggression, cuteness, danger – all of this portrayed through music (by a very clever composer) to make us respond to the animals on show in a pre-designated way by the production team.

Turn off the music that comes with the show (and the breathy narration) and see for yourself how you actually react to what you see without sound.

I can promise you that it’s vastly different. Yikes, I’ve just realised how sad I can be sometimes.
