Fort Nelson up on Portsdown Hill Road at Fareham has undergone a multi-million pound redevelopment, with a new entrance and gift shop.

I love the place, full of guns and information about the Palmerston Forts, a bit of gore in the hospital display and long drippy tunnels in which to let off steam.

The kids love it too and, best of all, it’s free.

The only downside was that we’d made the trip there hoping for a World War Two experience.

Sadly we were a bit premature and discovered we were actually in World War One week, but that didn’t have anything over and above the usual on offer.

To make the most out of the themed experiences, I think the trick is to visit on a weekend.
