Watching Andy Murray rewrite British tennis history on Sunday was absolute torture.

Even when he was up two sets to love and serving for the Championship, that little niggle of British doubt was still there.

If Murray had failed to hold his serve, Djokovic could have won that set and the match could have fallen apart for Murray.

Typical British cynicism! But we’ve watched such things happen to Murray and Tim Henman before him.

What a victory though. Tears of joy for us all and pride that we’re actually the best at something.

As for Murray the hero, now we see far beyond those monosyllabic tones and seemingly moody demeanour.
