So homemade cakes have been banned from its premises by Kirklees Council in Yorkshire. People who hire its halls have been told it poses a health and safety risk.

I love a bit of homemade cake – especially when it’s not made in my home. It’s great when baking’s on offer at work, whether because of a charity sale, birthday or leaving do.

Home baking may not mean that kitchens have been inspected and that ‘appropriate’ precautions have been taken, but come on.

We all gave up on the holy grail of bacteria-free cookery the day our children got involved. And our husbands.

Women who’ve seen their partners clean out their ear while perusing a recipe, then crack on with grating etc, will nod their heads in agreement.
