A week of chickenpox and Peppa Pig '“ at my age!

You may remember my two-year-old son Freddie contracted chickenpox and spots started to appear when we were on holiday in Spain recently.

I did check with my mum. She couldn’t remember if I’d had it as a child. Yes, I know, it was a long time ago!

It’s treated as a mild condition for children. If it wasn’t for the spots, you wouldn’t have known Freddie even had it.

I started to feel rough last Monday whilst on the breakfast show. As soon as those flu-like symptoms with the aches and pains start, I knew something was up.

By Tuesday I felt awful. I needed painkillers just to take the edge off.

Then my wife Sarah noticed a couple of spots.

Wednesday morning, the pharmacist and then the doctor confirmed it. Chickenpox…at my age!

Some anti-viral tablets, antihistamines to help with the itching and painkillers were the order of the day.

The rest of the week was simply terrible.

Aching, itching and no energy. I was completely drained.

Not hit for six, more like one hundred and six.

My scalp, face and upper body covered in horrible big red spots. I even had them in the most unexpected places.

Inside my ears, on my tonsils and yes, down there!

One night I couldn’t sleep I was in so much discomfort. I won’t say pain, as I know there are many who do live with pain every day.

For them, I have the utmost respect.

On the plus side, I did get to watch all the TV I’ve recorded over the past few weeks and no longer get time to watch thanks to Peppa Pig.

It’s taken seven days and now I’m starting to feel a bit better.

Sadly, my face looks like it’s been sandblasted and the surface of my nose could be mistaken for the moon!

But I feel better in myself. I am so thankful for that. Time to face the world again.
