We're divided and no-one's taking control of the future

Ouch, what a time it's been in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.

Last week I was delighted with Boris Johnson’s pronouncements on the future. I could live with his closet Remainer vision and then, budda bing, the spineless coward upped and ran away from the cake which he refused to mix, let alone bake.

He’s left immigration, the single market and legislation on the counter, the ingredients for Brexit, and disappeared before looking for the recipe book.

So now someone has to decide who is the new cook and which recipe they’re going to use.

And here’s the rub, the thing that infuriates me the most. The cooks all have different ideas of what to bake, what the outcome is going to be. But at the moment it’s looking like a whole lot of scramble.

Scramble for votes, scramble for agreement, scramble for policy, scramble the minds of everyone in the country who can’t move on with their lives.

We’re in limbo while we have to listen to the Conservative party lick or bite at each of the potential leaders’ fingertips to see which sticky mess they’re offering up for dessert.

Listen carefully to the language they’re using, words like leader, mature, thoughtful, plan. It’s all designed to spoon-feed us the idea that whoever is chosen is capable.

Don’t believe it. We are where we are because these very people didn’t sit down, didn’t think, didn’t consider making a plan for the referendum outcome.

And don’t even get me started on the Labour party. How is anything it’s doing right now supposed to be leadership?

How are the actions of the party representing anyone in the country? A shambolic situation which, the more I think about it, must have been orchestrated by someone in the Conservative party to deflect the righteous loathing and shaming which should be delivered in the bucketload through its letterbox.

I’m infuriated by the lack of forethought among our so-called leaders, who ran a referendum without having a clue about what one of the options looked like. We’re a country in division, with rascism rearing its ugly head, and no-one taking control of the future.

CLOSING SURE START CENTRES IS GOING TO BE A BITTER BLOW

A much bigger scandal than Scandals closing down is the recent news about Sure Start centres being closed in Fareham, Gosport and Havant.

Both of my daughters were lucky enough to attend a Sure Start children’s centre pre-school – the Haven in Bridgemary.

What a brilliant place, run by wonderful staff with amazing facilities. I can’t begin to compare the time they spent there with some of the dross places that my son attended (before we moved to this area).

The Sure Starts do exactly as they say on the can, giving children a great introduction to a wider world. But they also provide help and advice and an emotional safety blanket for new mums.

Closing them is a bitter blow.

IT WAS PART OF MY YOUTH AND I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT IT’S GOING

So Scandals will soon be no more and I can’t quite believe it.

The Portsmouth nightclub was part of my youth.

It was different – so tiny you could meet everyone in it within about 30 seconds.

I loved the low ceiling, I loved the heat.

But I hated the fact that I got refused entry more than once for forgetting that I couldn’t wear jeans.

How long ago was that?

I remember very little about the music played, or the décor, or anything much really.

One thing I do recall is that there was always an amazing burger van parked across the street at the end of an evening.

Long may Scandals exist in people’s memories, even if they never managed to make their own scandal there.
