I was really taken with a talk given at the weekend about the Pompey Pals (First World War regiments formed by men from Portsmouth and the surrounding area) and the work that has been done to commemorate them.
Perhaps I’ve had my head under a rock – or perhaps it’s a symptom of my genuine lack of interest in sport – but I’d missed the part where Portsmouth FC players have the names of the fallen from the city woven into their home shirts.
What an amazing tribute to people who joined the 14th and 15th battalions of the Hampshire Regiment and gave their lives for their country. More than 1,400 made the ultimate sacrifice.
