I was gobsmacked (what a great expression that is) to learn this week that the French courts can, and indeed do, overturn names that parents have chosen for their children.
If deemed inappropriate or likely to cause derision in later life, or if offensive, it’s within the French legal system to force parents to make another choice of name.
Can you imagine the power that would give you?
Yet at the same time it feels rather pointless as I well know that children can, and do, make fun of every name under the sun.
It was like that in my day and I’m sure it’s still the same now.
So where would you stop once you’ve embarked on a path of censorship in such a subjective area?
