I was in a pub in Old Portsmouth and decided to put some music on the juke box. Being a bit long in the tooth, I had to ask a 30-ish woman to do it for me.
‘Who do you want to hear?’ she asked.
‘Joe Jackson,’ I replied.
‘Never heard of him,’ she said, ‘can you spell it?’
I was surprised she hadn’t heard of one of our greatest local musical talents, who had three chart hits in the 1970s and 1980s and who still tours the world, writes film and show scores and has a new live album out. Oh, and he plays seven instruments.
‘He was brought up in Paulsgrove and Gosport and, although he now lives in Berlin, still has a house in Old Portsmouth,’ I informed her. She then went outside for a cigarette and heard none of the music.
