Why not have Olympic sports that reflect neighbourhoods?

COMMENT: Funding PTSD programme could end up saving money

Have your say

This weekend will see thousands of people turn out to watch the Olympic flame traverse Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Petersfield and Chichester.

A range of entertainments are planned, but I reckon organisers have missed a trick by not staging Olympic-style sports to reflect the flavour of each neighbourhood on the route.

You could have the 200m with an old lady’s handbag in Fratton, beach volleyball in ethnic knits in Southsea and Primark sales rail-wrestling in Commercial Road.

Then there could be a ‘pole vault the Spinnaker Tower’ competition.

Afterwards, the torch heads to well-heeled Petersfield and Chichester where water polo would be appropriate. The only question? Which private pool to use.
