Would an underwater tunnel really be Gosport’s saviour?

Rather predictably, the new BRT bus highway has made no difference to my daily commute at all.

The traffic on the A32 is as chocker as usual. There’s just a lack of buses on the major pinch point – because they now run parallel on the near-empty highway next door.

But for people in Gosport, the BRT has reignited the debate on whether the answer to all our prayers would be a tunnel underneath the harbour.

Aside from the fact that the Royal Navy’s new carriers have put the final nail in the lid of that particular coffin, I always thought it sounded like a massive white elephant.

Portsmouth’s roads are almost as congested as Gosport’s. Wouldn’t connecting the two via an underwater rat-run just see us scuttling from one jam to another?
