Party celebrates 50 years for Portsmouth high-rise block

RESIDENTS and staff at a sheltered housing complex held a 50th anniversary party.

Ladywood House, in Portsmouth, celebrated the milestone with a party full of games, music and tasty treats.

People living in the high-rise, on Plymouth Street, packed out the community room and said it was a lovely event to mark the big day.

Long-term residents June Gover and John Sutton cut the two-tier cake.

John said: ‘I’ve lived in the same flat since I moved here in April 1968 with my mum, gran and uncle and it’s been wonderful.

‘It was a real treat to move into a place with central heating, new windows and a working lift.

‘I’ve got everything I need right on my doorstep.’

Portsmouth City Council organised the party at the 23-storey building. Built in 1968 by construction company George Wimpey and Co, it was the tallest building in Portsmouth until the Spinnaker Tower was built in 2005.

David Mearns, Portsmouth City Council’s assistant housing manager, said: ‘It was a real pleasure to join in the celebrations with residents this afternoon.

‘Ladywood House is an iconic building on Portsmouth’s skyline and home to 159 of our residents.

‘I hope it will be here for many years to come.’

Staff support residents with living independently, helping when needed with daily living including emergency shopping and collecting prescriptions.
