Pay day at the dockyard: so it's into the pub for a brown and mild

THEN The Ship & Castle outside the dockyard main gate, circa 1960.

Surprisingly, the long frontage is in Queen Street but the address of the pub is The Hard, Portsea.

It was a very popular pub for dockyard men especially on pay day when, at out-muster, they used to crowd into the building for their pints of brown and mild.

The building to the right has seen several businesses over the years including a cafe and tobacconist.

NOW The Ship & Castle transformed. The building to the right has also been taken over by the pub. In the distance Admiralty Tower can be seen rising above Queen Street.

Since the refurbishment of the Ship & Castle building it has been incorporated as part of the pub. It is also now a restaurant.

The cars parked outside the building date the picture to about 1960, but I stand to be corrected.

In the modern photograph Admiralty Tower can be seen rising to the sky.

Strange how security would have at one time perhaps stopped the dockyard being overlooked by such a tall building.

RURAL Looking down Hambledon Hill on Hambledon Road from Waterlooville

In the remaining picture, of rolling rural acres, it is amazing to think that either side of this road there are now buildings galore.

The photographer is looking down Hambledon Hill along Hambledon Road on the way out of Waterlooville.

The fields to the left all now contain industrial outlets and offices.

To the right is the large shopping area containing the new Sainsbury’s.

Further down on the right is where the older-established Waterlooville industrial estate is now and also where WaterloovilleFootball Club could once be found.
