AN 89-YEAR old man had to be rescued after he fell into the river at the back of his house.

A large emergency operation involving fire crews, ambulance and police was launched to try to save the pensioner who had slipped and fell in his back garden in Pulens Crescent, Petersfield at 12.30pm on Saturday.

The man was rescued by 12.50pm, aided by Hampshire Fire Service’s water rescue unit, which is based in Fareham. The man cut his head, but did not need treatment.
