A 71-year-old man who died after a blaze broke out at his tower block flat has been named.

Martin Smith was alone at his ninth floor flat in Nickleby House, All Saints Road, Buckland, when the fire started.

Some residents were evacuated and about 45 firefighters were called to the 17-storey tower block at 5.15pm on May 16. Crews quickly contained the fire by tackling it from inside and from an aerial platform outside the building. Sadly Mr Smith died.

An inquest into his death was yesterday opened and adjourned.
