ANIMAL rights campaigners briefly brought Fareham town centre to a standstill when they held their annual march against Wickham Labs.

About 50 campaigners marched down West Street from Trinity Church, along Hartlands Road and past the Quay Street roundabout on the pavement before heading into West Street precinct.

As they marched they carried banners and chanted ‘Close down Wickham Labs,’ and ‘No more torture, no more pain, Wickham Labs are to blame’.

They were corralled throughout the march early on Saturday afternoon and along the route by dozens of police officers.

Jeanette McClunan of Stop Wickham Animal Testing said: ‘It did attract a lot of attention, but I always like to think that people go home and reflect and take in what it’s all about.’

The labs moved out of Wickham last year and are now based at Barwell Lane, Gosport, but have kept the trading name.

After the march many of the protesters went to Barwell Lane to stage a demonstration.
