The seven year-old male Shar Pei was found wandering loose by a member of the public on Widley Walk, at the back of Portsdown Hill.

The man found the dog, named Tai, at around 9.30pm last Wednesday.

The dog was lame and in pain, and also looked confused and was shivering with the cold.

The RSPCA was called and Tai was taken to a vet who found that he was suffering from a range of painful conditions, including ‘cherry eye’ - a dry eye condition, very severe dermatitis, arthritis in his hips, and hair loss across his body.

All of the issues appear to have been left untreated for some time which left him in a critical condition.

RSPCA inspector Tina Ward said: ‘Tai is such a lovely and sweet natured dog and it is just so upsetting to see him left in a condition like this.

‘He has to keep holding his leg up because he is in that much agony that it hurts him to stand.

‘Although he still loves cuddles, he is in pain and is very scared. We just really want to find out more about how this sad situation happened.

‘We’ve managed to trace some of his history and what is clear is that he really has been through the mill.

‘We know he used to live in Gosport at one point and we are hoping that someone from the area might recognise him or who might know who his most recent owner is.

‘We are appealing to anyone who might know more about how Tai came to be abandoned in this way or where he has come from.

‘All of the information we receive we treat in the strictest of confidence and we would encourage anyone who might know anything to please come forward.’

Anyone with information can contact the RSPCA inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

Tai is currently being treated for his conditions in the RSPCA’s care and is steadily improving. It is hoped that Tai will be available for re-homing once his health has improved.
