A NEW exhibition from a local artist will be on show.

Avril Lewis, from Southsea, will be having her exhibition showcased in the Kings Theatre, in Albert Road, Southsea.

The exhibition entitled The Solent is linked to Portsmouth and catalogues many varied characteristics.

These include the beaches along the southern shores of the mainland and the northern shores of the Isle of Wight, as well as interpreting the waters of the Solent itself.

Avril said: ‘In order to make my large-scale textile piece, I scoured each beach for found materials, recording each diverse landscape with its inherent stones, shell variations and flotsam, using both drawn and photographed images.

‘From this inspiration I created sketch-books, with hand-produced paper sheets utilising beach-combed sea fibres, such as sea kale and bamboo.’

The exhibition displays these individual pages, and Avril’s research prior to the creation of her large textile piece.

It will run from June 17 till June 29 and will be available for viewing on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10.30am till 2pm.
