PORTSMOUTH band Everything But Arms hope to have the next Christmas number one in the singles chart, with the help of the public.

The unsigned band, whose members met at Southdowns College, are currently down to the final 100 of a national competition aiming to fight Simon Cowell’s X-Factor winner for the top title.

Their singles are online and members of the public are being asked to vote for the act they like the best.

The winner of the competition, called Band Crusade, will then have their single recorded and released with the hope of making it to number one in the Christmas charts.

Will Powell, 21, of Gleepark Avenue, Havant, is the band’s lead singer and bassist.

He said: ‘It would mean the world to us if we won. It’s been my dream to play music to people my whole life so it would be amazing to finally get recognition for all the hard work we’ve been doing.’
