THERE was new year joy for parents as they welcomed new additions to their families.
Midwives at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham were kept busy through the night as mums went into labour.
The first baby of the year was delivered by 22-year-old Cheryl Doswell, who named her baby boy Jack.
Weighing 5lbs 8oz, Jack was delivered by caesarean section four weeks early at 1.50am yesterday.
It came as a shock for Cheryl and her partner Redmond Gregory, who were sent to hospital after a routine midwife check revealed Cheryl’s blood pressure was sky high.
Cheryl, a nursing home worker who recently moved from Havant to Locks Heath, said: ‘I was really scared but once I laid on that bed and heard his cry it made my year.
‘It’s amazing – he’s my little boy.
‘He’s the spitting image of his dad.’
Palmer Peaches Cross was born at 2.30am and becomes the fifth generation of her family.
Weighing 6lbs 15oz, her parents, Zak Cross, 25 and Robyn Bedford, 24, from Baffins, were very proud.
The family now spans from a day old to 85.
Great-grandmother Jan Palmer, 59, from Southsea, said: ‘It’s marvellous – it doesn’t happen very often.’
Also celebrating were Rachel and Ryan Moore, both 26, from Coates Way, Waterlooville.
Their baby girl, Willow, was delivered at 2.36am and weighed 6lbs 15oz.
‘It was pretty fast,’ said Ryan, who compared the experience to a dream he is still waiting to wake up from.
‘It’s definitely a good surprise and a good way to start the new year.’
Rachel, a travel agent, added: ‘It was probably the best new year present.
‘She loves to sleep and is quite content.
‘It’s already quite tiring but it’s everything I dreamt it would be. She’s perfect.’
Cohen Paul Smith was delivered into the world at 8.47am and weighed 8lbs 14oz.
Mum and dad Ainsley and Shaun Smith, from Baffins, couldn’t stop smiling yesterday.
Shaun, 31, said: ‘Ainsley was due to be induced. She’s been amazing through the whole process.
‘She started pushing at 8.30am and 17 minutes later she pushed the little man out – it was quite an achievement.’
