CHARITY and celebration went hand in hand at Fratton’s Labour Club where visitors and members watched the royal wedding and raised cash for the Rowans Hospice.

The club, which meets at Unity Hall in Coburg Street, was filled with people who donated money to the hospice’s Dorothy’s Dream appeal, which is backed by The News and aims to create a home nursing service to help terminally ill patients.

The event was organised by Labour Club member Jean Foster, 76, and friend Gloria Gill, 62. Local supermarkets donated prizes to help get the money rolling in.

Mrs Foster, who lost two husbands to cancer, said she was delighted with the response.

‘I know how the world is with money at the moment, so I am just so pleased that people are being this generous towards such a worthy charity,’ she said.
